When to use UPC-A

UPC-A is the twelve-digit retail barcode used in the United States and Canada. Like EAN-13 it encodes a GS1-licensed number rather than creating one, so use it when you already have a company prefix and need a print-ready symbol for the product you were allocated.

Drawing an EAN, UPC, ITF-14 or ISBN image does not assign you that number. Retail identifiers are licensed by GS1, and ISBNs come from your national ISBN agency. Nothing on this site is described as GS1 compliant.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between UPC-A and EAN-13?

A UPC-A number is a twelve-digit GTIN; EAN-13 is the thirteen-digit form used elsewhere. A UPC-A number is the same identifier as an EAN-13 with a leading zero, and modern retail scanners read both.

How many digits do I type?

Eleven digits and the modulo 10 check digit is calculated, or all twelve and the check digit is verified before anything is drawn.

Does this register my product?

No. Generating the image does not assign you a licensed retail number, and nothing here is submitted to GS1 or a retailer.

Has this output actually been read back?

Our exported UPC-A images were decoded again by our own scanner during testing.
