When to use EAN-8
EAN-8 exists for packs too small to carry a full EAN-13: confectionery, cosmetics samples, small tins. The short number is issued separately by GS1 precisely because it is scarce, so it is worth using only when the full-length symbol genuinely will not fit on the pack.
Read back by our scanner — Our exports were decoded back by our own scanner.
Drawing an EAN, UPC, ITF-14 or ISBN image does not assign you that number. Retail identifiers are licensed by GS1, and ISBNs come from your national ISBN agency. Nothing on this site is described as GS1 compliant.
Frequently asked questions
How many digits does EAN-8 take?
Seven digits with the modulo 10 check digit calculated, or eight digits with the check digit verified.
Is EAN-8 just a shortened EAN-13?
No. It is a separate allocation. You cannot truncate your EAN-13 number to make one — the short number has to be issued to you.
How much clear space does it need?
Seven modules of quiet zone on each side. On a small pack that margin is what usually gets lost, so lay it out before you shrink the symbol.
Has this output actually been read back?
Our exported EAN-8 images were decoded again by our own scanner during testing.
