When to use ITF-14

ITF-14 goes on the outer carton, not the retail pack. It encodes the case-level GTIN so a whole box can be scanned in a warehouse or at goods-in, and it is deliberately chunky because it is printed straight onto corrugated board where fine bars smear. Print it large, on a light panel, and keep the bearer bars and quiet zones intact.

Drawing an EAN, UPC, ITF-14 or ISBN image does not assign you that number. Retail identifiers are licensed by GS1, and ISBNs come from your national ISBN agency. Nothing on this site is described as GS1 compliant.

Frequently asked questions

How many digits does ITF-14 need?

Thirteen digits with the modulo 10 check digit calculated, or all fourteen with the check digit verified before drawing.

Is ITF-14 the same number as the retail barcode?

It is the case-level GTIN for the product, which differs from the item GTIN by its indicator digit. It is not a number this tool can invent for you — case codes come from your GS1 allocation.

Why is it printed so large?

It is read off cartons in warehouse conditions and often printed directly onto board. A larger symbol with a full quiet zone survives rough printing and dirty surfaces much better.

Has this output actually been read back?
