The short answer

The finished square is (17 + 4 × version) + 8 modules wide. Convert your target width to pixels with width ÷ 25.4 × DPI, then round that pixel count up to the next whole multiple of the module count. Divide by the module count and you have whole pixels per module.

Worked example: version 3 is 29 modules, 37 with the quiet zone. A 30 mm finished width at 300 DPI is 354.3 pixels, which is 9.577 pixels per module — not a whole number. Rounding up gives 10 pixels per module and a 370 px raster, printing at 31.33 mm.

  • Pixels per module — how many raster pixels each grid square occupies. Whole numbers only.
  • Raster width — the pixel dimension to export the PNG at, always a whole multiple of the module count.
